Ismail bin Ubayd reported,

He mentioned the hadith, and Ubada said to Abu Hurairah, "Abu Hurairah, you were not with us when we gave our pledge to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. We pledged to him to listen and obey, in times of energy and times of weariness, to spend in ease and in hardship, to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, to speak the truth concerning Allah without fearing the blame of any blamer, and to support the Prophet ﷺ when he came to us in Yathrib, defending him as we defend ourselves, our wives, and our children, in return for Paradise. This is the pledge of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ which we gave him. Whoever breaks it breaks it only against himself, and whoever fulfills what he pledged to the Messenger of Allah, Allah will fulfill for him what he pledged to His Prophet ﷺ."Then Muawiya wrote to Uthman bin Affan, "Ubada bin Samit has corrupted Sham and its people for me. Either you take Ubada to yourself, or I will leave Sham to him."So Uthman wrote back, "Send Ubada away, until you return him to his home in Medina."So he sent Ubada off until he reached Medina. He entered upon Uthman in the house, and there was no one in the house but a man from among the early Muslims, or from the Followers who had met the Companions. Uthman was suddenly startled to find Ubada sitting at the side of the house. He turned to him and said, "Ubada bin Samit, what is between us and you?"Ubada stood up among the people and said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abu Qasim Muhammad ﷺ, say, 'After me, men will rule your affairs who will teach you what you reject and reject what you recognize. There is no obedience to one who disobeys Allah , so do not make excuses regarding your Lord.'"

حدثنا الحكم بن نافع أبو اليمان حدثنا إسماعيل بن عياش عن عبد الله بن عثمان بن خثيم حدثني

فذكر الحديث فقال عبادة لأبي هريرة يا أبا هريرة إنك لم تكن معنا إذ بايعنا رسول الله ﷺ إنا بايعناه على السمع والطاعة في النشاط والكسل وعلى النفقة في اليسر والعسر وعلى الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر وعلى أن نقول في الله تبارك وتعالى ولا نخاف لومة لائم فيه وعلى أن ننصر النبي ﷺ إذا قدم علينا يثرب فنمنعه مما نمنع منه أنفسنا وأزواجنا وأبناءنا ولنا الجنة فهذه بيعة رسول الله ﷺ التي بايعنا عليها فمن نكث فإنما ينكث على نفسه ومن أوفى بما بايع رسول الله وفى الله تبارك وتعالى بما بايع عليه نبيه ﷺ فكتب معاوية إلى عثمان بن عفان أن عبادة بن الصامت قد أفسد علي الشام وأهله فإما تكن إليك عبادة وإما أخلي بينه وبين الشام فكتب إليه أن رحل عبادة حتى ترجعه إلى داره من المدينة فبعث بعبادة حتى قدم المدينة فدخل على عثمان في الدار وليس في الدار غير رجل من السابقين أو من التابعين قد أدرك القوم فلم يفجأ عثمان إلا وهو قاعد في جنب الدار فالتفت إليه فقال يا عبادة بن الصامت ما لنا ولك فقام عبادة بين ظهري الناس فقال سمعت رسول الله ﷺ أبا القاسم محمدا ﷺ يقول إنه سيلي أموركم بعدي رجال يعرفونكم ما تنكرون وينكرون عليكم ما تعرفون فلا طاعة لمن عصى الله تبارك وتعالى فلا تعتلوا بربكم
