A man from among us died, so we came to the Prophet ﷺ for him to perform the funeral prayer over him.He asked, "Did he leave anything behind?"They replied, "No, by Allah, he left nothing."He asked, "Did he leave behind any debt?"They said, "Yes, eighteen dirhams."He asked, "Did he leave anything to settle it?"They replied, "No, by Allah, he left nothing for that."He said, "Then you pray over him yourselves."Abu Qatada said, "Messenger of Allah, what if I settle his debt, will you pray over him?"He answered, "If you pay it in full on his behalf, I will pray over him."So Abu Qatada went and paid the debt.Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Have you settled what he owed?"He replied, "Yes."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for him and prayed over him.
حدثنا عفان حدثنا أبو عوانة عن عثمان بن عبد الله بن موهب
توفي رجل منا فأتينا النبي ﷺ ليصلي عليه فقال هل ترك من شيء قالوا لا والله ما ترك من شيء قال فهل ترك عليه من دين قالوا نعم ثمانية عشر درهما قال فهل ترك لها قضاء قالوا لا والله ما ترك لها من شيء قال فصلوا أنتم عليه قال أبو قتادة يا رسول الله أرأيت إن قضيت عنه أتصلي عليه قال إن قضيت عنه بالوفاء صليت عليه قال فذهب أبو قتادة فقضى عنه فقال أوفيت ما عليه قال نعم فدعا به رسول الله ﷺ فصلى عليه
