Abu Qatada reported,

He was narrating from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he stood among them and mentioned to them that fighting in the cause of Allah and belief in Allah are among the best of deeds.A man stood up and asked, "Messenger of Allah, tell me, if I am killed in the cause of Allah, will my sins be forgiven?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Yes, if you are killed in the cause of Allah while being patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What did you say?"The man repeated, "Tell me, if I am killed in the cause of Allah, will my sins be forgiven?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes, if you are killed while being patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, except for debt, for Jibreel told me that."

حدثنا حجاج حدثنا ليث حدثني سعيد بن أبي سعيد عن عبد الله بن أبي قتادة أنه سمع

أبا قتادة

يحدث عن رسول الله ﷺ أنه قام فيهم فذكر لهم الجهاد في سبيل الله عز وجل والإيمان بالله من أفضل الأعمال فقام رجل فقال يا رسول الله أرأيت إن قتلت في سبيل الله يكفر عني خطاياي فقال له رسول الله ﷺ نعم إن قتلت في سبيل الله وأنت صابر محتسب مقبل غير مدبر قال رسول الله ﷺ كيف قلت قال أرأيت إن قتلت في سبيل الله يكفر عني خطاياي قال رسول الله ﷺ نعم إن قتلت وأنت صابر محتسب مقبل غير مدبر إلا الدين فإن جبريل عليه السلام قال لي ذلك
