Abdullah bin Abu Qatada reported,

He used to relate that a man asked the Prophet ﷺ, "Messenger of Allah, tell me, if I am killed in the path of Allah, patient and seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, will Allah expiate my sins through that?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "If you are killed in the path of Allah, patient and seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, Allah will expiate your sins through that."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paused for as long as Allah willed. Then the man asked him again, "Messenger of Allah, if I am killed in the path of Allah, advancing and not retreating, will Allah expiate my sins for me?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "If you are killed in the path of Allah, advancing and not retreating, Allah will expiate your sins for you, except for debt. Jibreel told me so."

حدثنا يزيد بن هارون أخبرنا يحيى بن سعيد أن سعيد بن أبي سعيد المقبري أخبره أن

عبد الله بن أبي قتادة أخبره أن أباه

كان يحدث أن رجلا سأل النبي ﷺ فقال يا رسول الله أرأيت إن قتلت في سبيل الله صابرا محتسبا مقبلا غير مدبر كفر الله به خطاياي فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن قتلت في سبيل الله صابرا محتسبا مقبلا غير مدبر كفر الله به خطاياك ثم إن رسول الله ﷺ لبث ما شاء الله ثم سأله الرجل فقال يا رسول الله إن قتلت في سبيل الله مقبلا غير مدبر كفر الله عني خطاياي فقال رسول الله ﷺ إن قتلت في سبيل الله مقبلا غير مدبر كفر الله عنك خطاياك إلا الدين كذلك قال لي جبريل عليه السلام
