The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to deliver his sermons leaning against the trunk of a palm tree before the pulpit was made for him. When the pulpit was made and he moved over to it, the tree trunk moaned in longing for him. So he came to it and embraced it, and it became still.He said, "Had I not embraced it, it would have continued moaning until the Day of Resurrection."
حدثنا عفان أخبرنا حماد عن عمار بن أبي عمار
أن رسول الله ﷺ كان يخطب إلى جذع قبل أن يتخذ المنبر فلما اتخذ المنبر وتحول إليه حن عليه فأتاه فاحتضنه فسكن قال ولو لم أحتضنه لحن إلى يوم القيامة
Its isnad is sahih. Ibn Kathir cited it in Tarikh 6:129-130 from this very passage, and said, "This isnad meets the standard of Muslim, and no one recorded it except Ibn Majah, from the hadith of Hammad bin Salama." It is found in Ibn Majah 1:223.The yearning of the tree trunk is one of the cosmic miracles firmly established for the Messenger of Allah through decisive, uninterrupted transmission, contrary to what the ignorant followers of Europe imagine, those who believe, or pretend to believe, in the miracles of the earlier prophets, claiming that they believe in them because they are established in the Quran. Yet I do not think they believe in them, if they believe in them at all, except out of blind imitation of their masters, since those masters raised them and taught them that such miracles are established in the Torah. Then these same people deny every miracle of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, claiming that he had no miracle except the Quran, imagining thereby, or giving the false impression to the unwary and heedless, that they are defending Islam.Hafiz bin Kathir said in Tarikh 6:125, "Chapter on the yearning of the tree trunk out of longing for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and grief at being separated from him. This has been reported through the hadith of a group of companions, by numerous routes that establish certainty among the scholars of this field and the masters of this domain." He then narrated it with many sahih chains from the report of eight companions, and closed the chapter with what Abu Hatim Razi reported from Amr bin Sawwad, who said, "Shafii said to me, 'Allah did not give any prophet what he gave Muhammad.' I said to him, 'Did He give Isa the raising of the dead?' He said, 'He gave Muhammad the tree trunk that used to stand beside him while he delivered sermons, until a pulpit was made ready for him. When the pulpit was made ready for him, the trunk yearned for him until its voice was heard. This is greater than that.'"
