Najdah bin Amir wrote to Ibn Abbas asking him about several matters. I was present with Ibn Abbas when he read the letter and when he wrote his reply.Ibn Abbas said, "By Allah, were it not to prevent him from falling into evil, I would not have written to him at all, not even out of courtesy."He then wrote to him, "You asked me about the share of the near relatives whom Allah mentioned, who they are. We used to consider that they were the close relatives of the Messenger of Allah, but our people refused to grant us that. You asked me about the orphan, when his orphanhood ends. When he reaches the age of marriage and shows sound judgment, his property is handed over to him and his orphanhood has ended. You asked whether the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to kill any of the children of the polytheists. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not kill any of them, and you too must not kill them, unless you know about a child what Khidr knew about the boy he killed. You asked about the woman and the slave, whether they had a fixed share when they were present in battle. They had no fixed share, but they would be given something from the spoils of the Muslims."

Its isnad is sahih. This is a longer version of 1967, and Muslim narrated it in 2:78 through the route of Wahb bin Jareer bin Hazim from his father, and through the route of Bahz from Jareer.Unless I am mistaken, the particle "an" dropped out of ح by error, and we have restored it from ك and Sahih Muslim. The phrase "blessing of the eye" was explained earlier at 2206.Al-bas means hardship, referring to war and its hardships. Yajziya means "they both give." In ح it reads yajizna, which is an error, we have corrected it from ك and Sahih Muslim.See also Abu Dawud 3:26, Tirmidhi 1:294 (Bulaq edition), and Shawkani 8:113.
