When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to Yemen, he asked him, "How will you judge if a case is brought before you?"Muadh replied, "I will judge by what is in the Book of Allah."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "And if you do not find it in the Book of Allah?"He replied, "Then by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "And if you do not find it in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He replied, "Then I will exercise my own judgment and spare no effort."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then struck his chest and said, "Praise be to Allah, who has guided the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to that which pleases the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا شعبة عن أبي عون عن الحارث بن عمرو بن أخي المغيرة بن شعبة عن ناس من أصحاب معاذ من أهل حمص
أن رسول الله ﷺ حين بعثه إلى اليمن فقال كيف تصنع إن عرض لك قضاء قال أقضي بما في كتاب الله قال فإن لم يكن في كتاب الله قال فبسنة رسول الله ﷺ قال فإن لم يكن في سنة رسول الله ﷺ قال أجتهد رأيي لا آلو قال فضرب رسول الله ﷺ صدري ثم قال الحمد لله الذي وفق رسول رسول الله ﷺ لما يرضي رسول الله ﷺ
