I entered the congregational mosque in Basra and sat down with an elderly man whose head and beard were white. He said, "Muaz bin Jabal narrated to me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that he said, 'No soul dies bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah, returning that with a heart of certainty, except that Allah forgives it.'"I said to him, "Did you hear this directly from Muaz?"The people seemed to rebuke me for asking, but he said, "Do not rebuke him or scold him. Leave him be. Yes, I heard that from Muaz, who related it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Ismail once said, "transmitting it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."I asked one of them, "Who is this man?"He replied, "This is Abdul-Rahman bin Samura."

دخلت المسجد الجامع بالبصرة فجلست إلى شيخ أبيض الرأس واللحية فقال حدثني معاذ بن جبل عن رسول الله ﷺ أنه قال ما من نفس تموت وهي تشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأني رسول الله يرجع ذاكم إلى قلب موقن إلا غفر الله لها قلت له أنت سمعته من معاذ فكأن القوم عنفوني قال لا تعنفوه ولا تؤنبوه دعوه نعم أنا سمعت ذاك من معاذ يدبره عن رسول الله ﷺ وقال إسماعيل مرة يأثره عن رسول الله ﷺ قال قلت لبعضهم من هذا قال هذا عبد الرحمن بن سمرة
Its isnad is sahih. Hawsan bin Kahil, or Kahin as they said, was deemed reliable by Ibn Hibban, while Bukhari said nothing about him. He was deemed reliable in al-Kashif and accepted in al-Taqrib. Abdul-Rahman bin Samura is a companion whose biography was given earlier at 20494. The hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah, 2/1247, no. 3796, and by Humaydi, 1/181, no. 370.
