I asked him, "What do you make of Abdullah bin Umar's practice of performing ablution for every prayer, whether he was in a state of purity or not? What was the basis for this?"He replied, "Asma bint Zayd bin al-Khattab told him that Abdullah bin Hanzala bin Abu Amir Ibn al-Ghasil related to her that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had commanded ablution for every prayer, whether one was in a state of purity or not. When this became burdensome for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he commanded the use of the tooth-stick at every prayer and lifted the requirement of ablution except when one had broken his purity."He said, "Abdullah considered himself capable of maintaining the original practice, so he continued to do it until he died."

قلت له أرأيت وضوء عبد الله بن عمر لكل صلاة طاهرا كان أو غير طاهر عم هو فقال حدثته أسماء بنت زيد بن الخطاب أن عبد الله بن حنظلة بن أبي عامر ابن الغسيل حدثها أن رسول الله ﷺ كان أمر بالوضوء لكل صلاة طاهرا كان أو غير طاهر فلما شق ذلك على رسول الله ﷺ أمر بالسواك عند كل صلاة ووضع عنه الوضوء إلا من حدث قال فكان عبد الله يرى أن به قوة على ذلك كان يفعله حتى مات
