Sinan bin Salama and I set out together, taking two sacrificial camels with us. Along the way, the camels became exhausted and unable to continue.Sinan said to me, "What do you think about going to Ibn Abbas?"So we went to him, and Sinan asked him about the matter, and he mentioned the hadith.Ibn Abbas said, "A man from the tribe of Juhaynah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Messenger of Allah, my father is an elderly man who has not performed Hajj.'The Prophet ﷺ replied, 'Perform Hajj on behalf of your father.'"

Its isnad is sahih. Sinan bin Salama is the brother of Musa bin Salama bin Muhabbiq. As for his statement, "then he mentioned the hadith," Muslim related it (1:374) via Abdul-Warith, from Abu Tayah, "Musa bin Salama Hudhali told me, he said, 'Sinan bin Salama and I set out to perform Umrah,' he said, 'and Sinan set out with him driving a sacrificial camel, but it collapsed on him along the way, and he was at a loss about what to do with it if it became disabled, how he should deal with it. He said, "If I reach the town, I will certainly ask about this." He said, so I stayed until morning, and when we camped at Batha, he said, "Let us go to Ibn Abbas and speak with him." He said, so he mentioned to him the matter of his sacrificial camel, and Ibn Abbas said, 'You have landed upon someone knowledgeable. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ once sent sixteen sacrificial camels with a man and put him in charge of them.' He said, 'The man went on, then came back and said, "Messenger of Allah, what should I do with the one among them that became disabled?" He said, "Slaughter it, then dip its sandals in its blood, then place that on its side, and do not eat from it, neither you nor anyone from among your companions."'"A shorter version of this same account has already been given (1869) also via Abu Tayah. As for the end of the hadith here, concerning the man's question about performing Hajj on behalf of his father, Muslim did not mention it in that context, and the hadith will come again at greater length (2518) via Hammad bin Salama, from Abu Tayah.
