Ibn al-As and Zayd bin Thabit were writing out copies of the Quran when they came upon this verse. Zayd said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The old man and the old woman, when they commit adultery, stone them outright.'"Umar said, "When this was revealed, I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'Shall I write it down for you?'"Shuba said, it was as though he disliked that.Umar said, "Do you not see that if an old man is not married and commits adultery he is flogged, while if a young man commits adultery and is married he is stoned?"
Its isnad is sahih. Yunus bin Jubayr is al-Bahili, and Kathir bin Salt is Ibn Maad Yakrib al-Kindi al-Madani, both of whom are among the trustworthy senior successors. By Ibn al-As is meant Amr, and the second Umar is Umar bin Khattab. The hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah, 2/853, no. 2553, Darimi, 2/234, no. 2323, and Malik, 2/824, no. 10, all of them in the chapters on legal punishments.
