Shurayh bin Ubayd reported,

The narration goes back to Abu Dharr, who said that when the last ten nights of Ramadan arrived, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed itikaf in the mosque. After the Prophet ﷺ prayed the afternoon prayer on the twenty-second day, he said, "We will stand in prayer tonight, Allah willing. So whoever among you wishes to stand, let him stand." This was the night of the twenty-third. The Prophet ﷺ led them in congregational prayer after the night prayer until a third of the night had passed, then he departed.When the night of the twenty-fourth came, he did not pray anything and did not stand. When the night of the twenty-fifth came, after the afternoon prayer of the twenty-fourth day he stood and said, "We will stand in prayer tonight, Allah willing," meaning the night of the twenty-fifth, "so whoever wishes, let him stand." He prayed with the people until a third of the night had passed, then he departed.When the night of the twenty-sixth came, he said nothing and did not stand. When the time of the afternoon prayer of the twenty-sixth day came, he stood and said, "We will stand in prayer, Allah willing," meaning the night of the twenty-seventh, "so whoever wishes to stand, let him stand."Abu Dharr said, "We summoned our resolve to stand, and the Prophet ﷺ led us in prayer until two-thirds of the night had passed, then he withdrew to his tent in the mosque."I said to him, "Messenger of Allah, we had hoped that you would lead us in prayer until morning."He replied, "Abu Dharr, when you pray with your imam and depart when he departs, the standing of an entire night is recorded for you."Abu Abdul-Rahman said.

يرده إلى أبي ذر أنه قال لما كان العشر الأواخر اعتكف رسول الله ﷺ في المسجد فلما صلى النبي ﷺ صلاة العصر من يوم اثنين وعشرين قال إنا قائمون الليلة إن شاء الله فمن شاء منكم أن يقوم فليقم وهي ليلة ثلاث وعشرين فصلاها النبي ﷺ جماعة بعد العتمة حتى ذهب ثلث الليل ثم انصرف فلما كان ليلة أربع وعشرين لم يصل شيئا ولم يقم فلما كان ليلة خمس وعشرين قام بعد صلاة العصر يوم أربع وعشرين فقال إنا قائمون الليلة إن شاء الله يعني ليلة خمس وعشرين فمن شاء فليقم فصلى بالناس حتى ذهب ثلث الليل ثم انصرف فلما كان ليلة ست وعشرين لم يقل شيئا ولم يقم فلما كان عند صلاة العصر من يوم ست وعشرين قام فقال إنا قائمون إن شاء الله يعني ليلة سبع وعشرين فمن شاء أن يقوم فليقم قال أبو ذر فتجلدنا للقيام فصلى بنا النبي ﷺ حتى ذهب ثلثا الليل ثم انصرف إلى قبته في المسجد فقلت له إن كنا لقد طمعنا يا رسول الله أن تقوم بنا حتى تصبح فقال يا أبا ذر إنك إذا صليت مع إمامك وانصرفت إذا انصرف كتب لك قنوت ليلتك قال أبو عبد الرحمن
