I came to Medina intending to receive my stipend from Uthman bin Affan. I sat down at one of the gatherings of the Quraysh when a man arrived wearing tattered rags, with a cloth wrapped around his head. He said, "Give glad tidings to the hoarders of branding on their foreheads, branding on their backs, and branding on their sides."Then he stepped aside to a pillar and prayed two units of prayer behind it.I asked, "Who is this?"It was said, "This is Abu Dharr."So I said to him, "What was that you were calling out?"He replied, "I said nothing to them except something they heard from their Prophet ﷺ."I said, "May Allah have mercy on you. I used to receive the stipend from Umar. What do you think?"He said, "Take it, for today it is a help. But it is about to become a means of compromising your religion. When it does, reject it."
