Malik Ashtar Nakhai reported,

Abu Dharr was overtaken by death while he was at Rabadhah, and his wife began to weep.He asked her, "What makes you weep?"She replied, "I weep because I have no means to handle your burial, and I do not have a garment large enough to shroud you."He said, "Do not weep. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one day, while I was with him among a group of people, saying, 'One of you will surely die in a desolate land, and a band of believers will be present at his death.' Every man who was with me in that gathering has since died in a town or among a community, and none of them remain except me. Now I find myself dying in this desolate place, so watch the road, for you will see what I am telling you. By Allah, I have not lied, nor have I been lied to."She said, "How can that be, when the pilgrimage season has ended?"He said, "Watch the road."While she was in that state, suddenly there were men whose mounts were carrying them swiftly along, looking like vultures. The people approached until they stopped beside her. They asked, "What is the matter with you?"She said, "Here is a man of the Muslims. Will you shroud him and earn reward for it?"They asked, "And who is he?"She replied, "Abu Dharr."They offered their fathers and mothers as ransom for him, and they urged their camels forward, striking their necks with their whips, hastening to him.He said, "Rejoice. You are the very band that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke of. Rejoice. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'There are no two Muslim spouses who lose two or three children, then bear it patiently seeking reward, who will ever see the Fire.' Now I find myself today as you see me. Had any garment of mine been large enough, I would have been shrouded in nothing else. I implore you by Allah, let no man among you who has served as a commander, a tribal chief, or a courier shroud me."Every one of the men present had held some such position, except for a young man from the Ansar who was with the group. He said, "I am your man. These two garments I have in my bag are from my mother's spinning, and I also have these two I am wearing."Abu Dharr said, "You are my man. Shroud me."
