He said, "Whoever stands in prayer the whole year through will catch Laylat al-Qadr." So I set out until I came to Uthman bin Affan, and I wanted to meet the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from among the Muhajirun and the Ansar.Asim said, "He told me that he kept close company with Ubayy bin Kaab and Abdul-Rahman bin Awf, and he claimed that the two of them would remain standing in prayer until the sun set, then they would pray two units of prayer before Maghrib."He continued, "I said to Ubayy, who had a sharp temper, 'Be gentle with me, may Allah have mercy on you, for I am only seeking to benefit from you.'Ubayy replied, 'You want to leave no verse in the Quran without asking me about it.'"He went on, "And I had a sincere companion. I said, 'Abu al-Mundhir, tell me about Laylat al-Qadr, for Ibn Masud says, Whoever stands in prayer the whole year through will catch it.'Ubayy said, 'By Allah, Abdullah knew well that it is in Ramadan, but he kept it obscure from the people so they would not rely solely upon it. By Allah who revealed the Book upon Muhammad, it is indeed in Ramadan, and it is the twenty-seventh night.'I asked, 'Abu al-Mundhir, how did you come to know that?'He answered, 'By the sign that Muhammad ﷺ told us about. We counted and remembered, and by Allah, it is that night without any doubt.'I asked, 'And what is the sign?'He said, 'When the sun rises that morning, it rises without rays until it climbs higher.'"Asim, on that night, would take nothing to eat from the time of the predawn meal. When he had prayed Fajr, he would climb up to the tower and watch the sun as it rose, without rays, until it grew white and climbed higher.
حدثنا عبد الله حدثني العباس بن الوليد النرسي قال حدثنا حماد بن شعيب عن عاصم عن زر بن حبيش
في ليلة القدر من يقم الحول يصبها فانطلقت حتى قدمت على عثمان بن عفان وأردت لقي أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ من المهاجرين والأنصار قال عاصم فحدثني أنه لزم أبي بن كعب وعبد الرحمن بن عوف فزعم أنهما كانا يقومان حتى تغرب الشمس فيركعان ركعتين قبل المغرب قال فقلت لأبي وكانت فيه شراسة اخفض لنا جناحك رحمك الله فإني إنما أتمتع منك تمتعا فقال تريد أن لا تدع آية في القرآن إلا سألتني عنها قال وكان لي صاحب صدق فقلت يا أبا المنذر أخبرني عن ليلة القدر فإن ابن مسعود يقول من يقم الحول يصبها فقال والله لقد علم عبد الله أنها في رمضان ولكنه عمى على الناس لكيلا يتكلوا والله الذي أنزل الكتاب على محمد إنها لفي رمضان وإنها ليلة سبع وعشرين فقلت يا أبا المنذر أنى علمت ذلك قال بالآية التي أنبأنا بها محمد ﷺ فعددنا وحفظنا فوالله إنها لهي ما يستثنى قال فقلت وما الآية فقال إنها تطلع حين تطلع ليس لها شعاع حتى ترتفع وكان عاصم ليلتئذ من السحر لا يطعم طعاما حتى إذا صلى الفجر صعد على الصومعة فنظر إلى الشمس حين تطلع لا شعاع لها حتى تبيض وترتفع
