I said to Ibn Abbas, "Nawf al-Shami claims, or says, that the Musa who was the companion of Khidr was not the Musa of the Children of Israil."Ibn Abbas replied, "Nawf, the enemy of Allah, has lied. Ubayy bin Kaab narrated to me from the Prophet ﷺ that Musa ﷺ stood up to address the Children of Israil, and they asked him, 'Who is the most knowledgeable of people?'He answered, 'I am.'So Allah revealed to him that He had a servant who was more knowledgeable than him.Musa said, 'My Lord, show him to me.'It was said to him, 'Take a fish and place it in a basket, and wherever you lose it, there he will be.'So he took a fish and placed it in a basket, and he and his companion set off walking along the shore until they came to a rock. Musa
fell asleep, and the fish stirred in the basket and fell into the sea. Allah held back the flow of the water from it, and the water formed an arch over it. Musa awoke and said to his servant, 'Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered fatigue from this journey of ours' [Kahf 18:62]. He had not felt fatigue until he had passed the place Allah
had commanded him to reach. His servant said, 'Did you see when we took refuge at the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish, and none made me forget it except Satan' [Kahf 18:63]. 'So they returned, retracing their footsteps' [Kahf 18:64]. They began retracing their steps, and the fish had taken its way through the sea as if through a tunnel. He said, "Allah held back the flow of the water from it, so it became like an archway above it. It was a tunnel for the fish but a wonder for Musa
, until they reached the rock. There they found a man covered with a garment. Musa greeted him with peace. The man said, 'And how is there peace in your land?'Musa said, 'I am Musa.'The man asked, 'The Musa of the Children of Israil?'He answered, 'Yes. May I follow you so that you may teach me from what you have been taught of right guidance?' [Kahf 18:66].He replied, 'Musa, I have knowledge from Allah
that you do not know, and you have knowledge from Allah that He has taught you.'So they set off walking along the shore. A ship passed by, and the crew recognized Khidr and carried them without charge. Khidr was not pleased with the ship, and he looked at it and took an axe, intending to break one of its planks.Musa said, 'They carried us without charge, and you want to make a hole in it to drown its people?'He said, 'Did I not say that you would never be able to have patience with me?' [Kahf 18:72].Musa said, 'I forgot.'A sparrow came and pecked at the sea. Khidr said, 'My knowledge and your knowledge diminish nothing of Allah's knowledge, except as much as this sparrow diminishes from this sea.'They continued on until they came to the people of a town. They asked its people for food, but they refused to host them. Then he saw a boy, took hold of his head, and tore it off.Musa said, 'Have you killed an innocent soul who killed no one? You have certainly done a terrible thing. Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?' [Kahf 18:74–75]."Sufyan said, Amr said, "And this was more severe than the first."He continued, "They went on, and they came to a wall on the verge of collapsing, and he set it upright."Sufyan demonstrated with his hands, raising them up like this, then placing his palms and lifting them with the inner sides of his hands raised up.Musa said, "If you had wished, you could have taken payment for it." He said, "This is the parting between me and you" [Kahf 18:77–78].Ibn Abbas said, "The first was forgetfulness."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Musa. If only he had been patient, so that more of his story could have been told to us."
