Abdullah bin Abbas reported,

He and Hurr bin Qays bin Hisn al-Fazari were disputing about the companion of Musa who asked for the way to meet him. Ibn Abbas said, "He was Khidr."Just then, Ubayy bin Kaab passed by them, and Ibn Abbas called out to him, saying, "I have been disputing with my companion here about the companion of Musa who asked for the way to meet him. Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention his story?"Ubayy replied, "Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'While Musa was sitting among a gathering of the Children of Israil, a man stood up and asked him, "Do you know anyone more knowledgeable than yourself?" Musa answered, "No." So Allah revealed to him, "Yes, Our servant Khidr." Musa then asked for the way to meet him, and Allah made the fish a sign for him. He was told, "When you lose the fish, turn back, for you will meet him."'"Ibn Musab said in his version of the hadith, "So they stopped at a place to rest, and Musa said to his servant boy, 'Bring us our morning meal. We have certainly suffered fatigue from this journey of ours' [Kahf 18:62]. At that point he realized the fish was missing, and 'they returned, retracing their footsteps' [Kahf 18:64]. Musa began following the trail of the fish in the sea. Their story then unfolded as Allah has recounted in His Book."

عن ابن عباس

أنه تمارى هو والحر بن قيس بن حصن الفزاري في صاحب موسى عليه السلام الذي سأل السبيل إلى لقيه فقال ابن عباس هو خضر إذ مر بهما أبي بن كعب فناداه ابن عباس فقال إني تماريت أنا وصاحبي هذا في صاحب موسى عليه السلام الذي سأل السبيل إلى لقيه فهل سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يذكر شأنه قال نعم سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول بينا موسى عليه السلام في ملإ من بني إسرائيل إذ قام إليه رجل فقال هل تعلم أحدا أعلم منك قال لا قال فأوحى الله تبارك وتعالى إليه عبدنا خضر فسأل موسى عليه السلام السبيل إلى لقيه وجعل الله تبارك وتعالى له الحوت آية فقيل له إذا فقدت الحوت فارجع فإنك ستلقاه قال ابن مصعب في حديثه فنزل منزلا فقال موسى عليه السلام لفتاه {آتنا غداءنا لقد لقينا من سفرنا هذا نصبا} فعند ذلك فقد الحوت {فارتدا على آثارهما قصصا} فجعل موسى عليه السلام يتبع أثر الحوت في البحر قال فكان من شأنهما ما قص الله تبارك وتعالى في كتابه
