In Zuhayr's version, the narrator is Rifa bin Rafi, who was present at Aqabah and at Badr. He said, I was with Umar when someone told him that Zayd bin Thabit was giving the people legal rulings in the masjid. Zuhayr's version says, giving the people rulings based on his own opinion concerning a man who has intercourse without ejaculating.Umar said, "Bring him here at once."So Zayd was brought to him, and Umar said, "Enemy of your own soul, have you gone so far as to give the people rulings in the masjid of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ based on your own opinion?"Zayd replied, "I did not do that. My uncles narrated it to me from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Umar asked, "Which of your uncles?"He said, "Ubayy bin Kaab." Zuhayr's version adds, "and Abu Ayub, and Rifa bin Rafi."Then Umar turned to me and said, "What is this young man saying?" Zuhayr's version has, "What is this boy saying?"I said, "We used to do it in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Umar asked, "And did you ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it?"I said, "We used to do it during his lifetime and we did not perform ghusl."So Umar gathered the people, and they all agreed that water is required only when water is emitted, all except two men, Ali bin Abu Talib and Muaz bin Jabal, who said, "Once the circumcised parts have passed one another, ghusl becomes obligatory."Ali said, "Commander of the Faithful, the people who know most about this are the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."So Umar sent word to Hafsa, and she said, "I have no knowledge of it."Then he sent word to Ayesha, and she said, "Once the circumcised parts have passed one another, ghusl becomes obligatory."At this Umar was seized with anger, and then he said, "Let no report reach me that anyone has done this and not performed ghusl, or I will punish him severely."
