Ubayy bin Kaab reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught him to recite a verse, and he heard another man reciting it differently from the way Ubayy had been taught.Ubayy asked the man, "Who taught you this recitation?"The man replied, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught it to me."Ubayy said, "By Allah, he taught it to me in such and such a way."Ubayy said, "No doubt about Islam ever shook me as it shook me that day."So I went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, did you not teach me to recite the verse in such and such a way?"He said, "Yes."I said, "But this man claims that you taught him to recite it in such and such a way."He then struck my chest with his hand, and that doubt left me. I never felt anything of it again afterward.Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Jibreel and Mikail, peace be upon them, came to me. Jibreel said, 'Recite the Quran on one mode.' Mikail said, 'Ask for more.' He said, 'Recite it on two modes.' Mikail said, 'Ask for more,' until he reached seven modes. He said, 'Each is sufficient and complete.'"
قال حدثنا عفان قال حدثنا حماد قال أخبرنا حميد عن أنس
أن أبي بن كعب قال أقرأني رسول الله ﷺ آية وأقرأها آخر غير قراءة أبي فقلت من أقرأكها قال أقرأنيها رسول الله ﷺ قلت والله لقد أقرأنيها كذا وكذا قال أبي فما تخلج في نفسي من الإسلام ما تخلج يومئذ فأتيت النبي ﷺ قلت يا رسول الله ألم تقرئني آية كذا وكذا قال بلى قال فإن هذا يدعي أنك أقرأته كذا وكذا فضرب بيده في صدري فذهب ذاك فما وجدت منه شيئا بعد ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ أتاني جبريل وميكائيل عليهما السلام فقال جبريل اقرأ القرآن على حرف فقال ميكائيل استزده قال اقرأه على حرفين قال استزده حتى بلغ سبعة أحرف قال كل شاف كاف
