The Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in the noon prayer, then sat down in the shade of a tree. Aqra bin Habis and Uyayna bin Hisn bin Badr came up to him. Uyayna was demanding retaliation for the blood of the Ashjai, Amir bin al-Adbat, and he was at that time the chief of Qays, while Aqra bin Habis was defending Muhallim bin Jathama on behalf of Khindif. They brought their dispute before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and we heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, "You shall accept the blood-money, fifty on this journey of ours and fifty when we return."Uyayna said, "By Allah, Messenger of Allah, I will not let him be until I make his women taste the grief he has made my women taste."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Rather, you shall take the blood-money." But Uyayna refused.Then a man from Layth named Mukaytil, a short, stocky man, stood up and said, "Prophet of Allah, I find no comparison for this slain man at the dawn of Islam except like a flock of sheep that came to drink, and the first of them was shot, so the rest fled. Set the precedent today and change it tomorrow."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hand and said, "Rather, you shall accept the blood-money on this journey of ours, fifty, and fifty when we return." He kept pressing the people until they accepted the blood-money.When they had accepted it, they said, "Where is your companion, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ may seek forgiveness for him?" A tall, dark-skinned man, lean of build, wearing a fine garment which he had put on prepared to be killed, stood up and came forward until he sat before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.When he sat down, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "What is your name?"He answered, "I am Muhallim bin Jathama."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim. O Allah, do not forgive Muhallim," three times. The man rose from before him, wiping away his tears with the edge of his cloak.As for us, we said among ourselves, "He has indeed sought forgiveness for him, but he showed what he showed only so that people would leave one another alone."
حدثنا أبو عثمان سعيد بن يحيى بن سعيد بن أبان بن سعيد بن العاص حدثني أبي حدثنا محمد بن إسحاق عن محمد بن جعفر بن الزبير قال سمعت زياد بن ضمرة بن سعد السلمي
صلى بنا رسول الله ﷺ الظهر ثم جلس إلى ظل شجرة فقام إليه الأقرع بن حابس وعيينة بن حصن بن بدر يطلب بدم الأشجعي عامر بن الأضبط وهو يومئذ سيد قيس والأقرع بن حابس يدفع عن محلم بن جثامة لخندف فاختصما بين يدي رسول الله ﷺ فسمعنا رسول الله ﷺ يقول تأخذون الدية خمسين في سفرنا هذا وخمسين إذا رجعنا قال يقول عيينة والله يا رسول الله لا أدعه حتى أذيق نساءه من الحزن ما أذاق نسائي فقال رسول الله ﷺ بل تأخذون الدية فأبى عيينة فقام رجل من ليث يقال له مكيتل رجل قصير مجموع فقال يا نبي الله ما وجدت لهذا القتيل شبيها في غرة الإسلام إلا كغنم وردت فرمي أولها فنفر آخرها اسنن اليوم وغير غدا قال فرفع رسول الله ﷺ يده ثم قال بل تقبلون الدية في سفرنا هذا خمسين وخمسين إذا رجعنا فلم يزل بالقوم حتى قبلوا الدية قال فلما قبلوا الدية قال قالوا أين صاحبكم يستغفر له رسول الله ﷺ فقام رجل آدم طويل ضرب عليه حلة كان تهيأ للقتل حتى جلس بين يدي رسول الله ﷺ فلما جلس قال له رسول الله ﷺ ما اسمك قال أنا محلم بن جثامة قال رسول الله ﷺ اللهم لا تغفر لمحلم اللهم لا تغفر لمحلم ثلاث مرات فقام من بين يديه وهو يتلقى دمعه بفضل ردائه فأما نحن بيننا فنقول قد استغفر له ولكنه أظهر ما أظهر ليدع الناس بعضهم من بعض
