Qays bin Abu Hazim reported,

We came to visit Khabab bin Arat during his illness. He had been cauterized seven times on his abdomen, and he said, "Had the Messenger of Allah ﷺ not forbidden us to pray for death, I would have prayed for it, for my illness has dragged on."Then he said, "Our companions who have passed on took nothing from this world, while we have obtained after them wealth for which we find no place except the dirt."He also said, referring to a wall he was building, "A Muslim man is rewarded for everything he spends, except for what he puts into the dirt."He said, "We complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was reclining on a cloak of his in the shade of the Kaaba. We said, 'Messenger of Allah, will you not ask Allah Almighty to grant us victory?'He sat up, his face flushed, and said, 'By Allah, among those before you a man would be seized and saws would be set upon his head so that he was split in two, yet that did not turn him from his religion. And Allah will surely bring this matter to completion, until a rider travels between Sanaa and Hadramawt fearing none but Allah, and the wolf for his sheep.'"He said, "This world took nothing from them." And he said, "He would be combed with iron combs, so that nothing was left over his bones of flesh or sinew, yet nothing turned him from his religion."

حدثنا محمد بن يزيد حدثنا إسماعيل فذكر معناه إلا أنه قال لم تنقصهم الدنيا شيئا ويمشط بأمشاط الحديد ما دون عظمه من لحم وعصب لا يصرفه عن دينه شيء
