Amir bin Wathila reported,

I said to Ibn Abbas, "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ramal during tawaf and that it is a sunnah."He replied, "My people have spoken truthfully, and they have also erred. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did indeed perform ramal, but it is not a sunnah. He arrived in Mecca while the polytheists were on the mountain of Quayqian, and they were saying that he and his companions were weakened, exhausted, and worn out. So he commanded them to perform ramal around the House to show the polytheists that they were not stricken by fatigue."

قلت لابن عباس إن قومك يزعمون أن رسول الله ﷺ قد رمل وأنها سنة قال صدق قومي وكذبوا قد رمل رسول الله ﷺ وليست بسنة ولكنه قدم والمشركون على جبل قعيقعان فتحدثوا أن به وبأصحابه هزلا وجهدا وشدة فأمر بهم فرملوا بالبيت ليريهم أنهم لم يصبهم جهد
