When this verse was revealed, "Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it" [Baqarah 2:284], something entered their hearts from it that had never entered their hearts from anything before. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Say, 'We hear and we obey and we submit.'" So Allah cast faith into their hearts, and Allah revealed, "The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, saying, 'We make no distinction between any of His messengers.' And they say, 'We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the destination.' Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. It will have the reward of what good it has earned, and it will bear the consequence of what evil it has earned. Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden like the one You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we have no strength to bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so grant us victory over the disbelieving people" [Baqarah 2:285–286].Abu Abdul-Rahman said, "This Adam is the father of Yahya bin Adam."
Its isnad is sahih. Adam bin Sulayman is trustworthy, Nasai deemed him trustworthy, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in al-Thiqat, and Bukhari gave his biography in al-Kabir 1/2/29. It is stated in al-Tahdhib that Muslim narrated one hadith from him about faith as a corroborating narration, meaning this hadith, but in fact it is not a corroborating narration, rather it is the primary source. It appears in Sahih Muslim 1:47 through the route of Waki, with an addition, "He said, 'I have done so'," meaning that Allah answered their supplication for them, and praise be to Allah. Ibn Kathir cited it in his tafsir 2:81 from al-Musnad at this very point.
