We went on a military campaign for a year, then returned, and among us was an elderly man from Khathaam. Hajjaj was mentioned, and he began criticizing and cursing him.I said to him, "Why are you cursing him when he is fighting the people of Iraq in obedience to the Commander of the Believers?"He replied, "He is the one who declared them disbelievers." Then he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'There will be five trials in this nation. Four have already passed, and one remains, and it is the calamity, and it is among you, people of Sham. If you live to see it, then if you are able to be a stone, be one, and do not side with either of the two parties. Indeed, take a hiding place in the earth.'"Hammad said, "And do not be," and Hammad had narrated this to us before that.I asked, "Did you yourself hear it from the Prophet ﷺ?"He replied, "Yes."I said, "May Allah have mercy on you. Why did you not inform me that you had seen the Prophet ﷺ so that I could question you further?"
