The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Abdul-Rahman, do not ask for a position of authority, for if you are given it after asking for it, you will be left to handle it on your own, but if you are given it without asking, you will be helped in carrying it out. And if you take an oath and then see something better than it, expiate for your oath and do what is better."My father said, Affan and Aswad agreed in their narration, saying, "Then expiate for your oath and do what is better." And Abu Ashhab reported from al-Hasan in this hadith that he began with the expiation.
حدثنا أسود بن عامر وعفان قالا ثنا جرير بن حازم قال سمعت الحسن
قال لي رسول الله ﷺ يا عبد الرحمن لا تسأل الإمارة فإنك إن أوتيتها عن مسألة وكلت إليها وإن أوتيتها عن غير مسألة أعنت عليها وإذا حلفت على يمين فرأيت غيرها خيرا منها فكفر عن يمينك وأت الذي هو خير قال أبي اتفق عفان وأسود في حديثهما فقال فكفر عن يمينك ثم ائت الذي هو خير وقال أبو الأشهب عن الحسن في هذا الحديث فبدأ بالكفارة
