He was one of the small group concerning whom this verse was revealed, "Nor is there blame on those who, when they came to you for you to provide them with mounts" [Tawbah 9:92], to the end of the verse.He said, "I was holding a branch from one of the branches of the tree, shading the Prophet ﷺ with it while they were pledging allegiance to him."They said, "We pledge allegiance to you upon death."He replied, "No, rather pledge that you will not flee."
حدثنا وكيع عن أبي جعفر الرازي عن الربيع بن أنس عن أبي العالية أو عن غيره
وكان أحد الرهط الذين نزلت فيهم هذه الآية {ولا على الذين إذا ما أتوك لتحملهم} إلى آخر الآية قال إني لآخذ بغصن من أغصان الشجرة أظل به النبي ﷺ وهم يبايعونه فقالوا نبايعك على الموت قال لا ولكن لا تفروا
