Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakra reported,

We came as a delegation with Ziyad to Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, and among us was Abu Bakra. When we arrived before him, no delegation pleased him as much as ours did.He said, "Abu Bakra, narrate to us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to be pleased by good dreams and would ask about them. One day he said, 'Which of you has seen a dream?'A man said, 'I have. I saw as though a scale was lowered from the sky. You and Abu Bakr were weighed, and you outweighed Abu Bakr. Then Abu Bakr and Umar were weighed, and Abu Bakr outweighed Umar. Then Umar was weighed against Uthman, and Umar outweighed Uthman. Then the scale was lifted up.'This distressed him." Hammad also said, "That grieved him." Then he said, "A caliphate of prophethood, then Allah gives kingship to whomever He wills."Abu Bakra said, "He shoved us by the napes of our necks and threw us out."Ziyad said, "May you have no father, could you not find any hadith other than this? Narrate to him something else."He said, "No, by Allah, I will narrate nothing to him but this until I part from him."So he left us. Then he summoned us again and said, "Abu Bakra, narrate to us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He struck him with the same hadith, so he shoved us by the napes of our necks and threw us out.Ziyad said, "May you have no father, can you not find any hadith other than this? Narrate something else to him."He said, "No, by Allah, I will narrate nothing to him but this until I part from him."He left us for several days, then summoned us again and said, "Abu Bakra, narrate to us something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He struck him with it once more.Muawiya said, "Are you saying kingship? We are content with kingship."

حدثنا عفان حدثنا حماد بن سلمة أخبرنا علي بن زيد

عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي بكرة قال

وفدنا مع زياد إلى معاوية بن أبي سفيان وفينا أبو بكرة فلما قدمنا عليه لم يعجب بوفد ما أعجب بنا فقال يا أبا بكرة حدثنا بشيء سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ فقال كان رسول الله ﷺ يعجبه الرؤيا الحسنة ويسأل عنها فقال ذات يوم أيكم رأى رؤيا فقال رجل أنا رأيت كأن ميزانا دلي من السماء فوزنت أنت وأبو بكر فرجحت بأبي بكر ثم وزن أبو بكر وعمر فرجح أبو بكر بعمر ثم وزن عمر بعثمان فرجح عمر بعثمان ثم رفع الميزان فاستاء لها وقد قال حماد أيضا فساءه ذاك ثم قال خلافة نبوة ثم يؤتي الله تبارك وتعالى الملك من يشاء قال فزخ في أقفائنا فأخرجنا فقال زياد لا أبا لك أما وجدت حديثا غير ذا حدثه بغير ذا قال لا والله لا أحدثه إلا بذا حتى أفارقه فتركنا ثم دعا بنا فقال يا أبا بكرة حدثنا بشيء سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ قال فبكعه به فزخ في أقفائنا فأخرجنا فقال زياد لا أبا لك أما تجد حديثا غير ذا حدثه بغير ذا فقال لا والله لا أحدثه إلا به حتى أفارقه قال ثم تركنا أياما ثم دعا بنا فقال يا أبا بكرة حدثنا بشيء سمعته من رسول الله ﷺ قال فبكعه فقال معاوية أتقول الملك فقد رضينا بالملك
