The Prophet ﷺ delivered a sermon during his pilgrimage and said, "Time has come full circle, returning to the form it had on the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, four of which are sacred. Three are consecutive, Dhul Qadah, Dhul Hijjah, and Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab of Mudar, which falls between Jumada and Shaban."Then he asked, "What day is this?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent for so long that we thought he would give it a name other than its own. Then he said, "Is it not the Day of Sacrifice?"We said, "Yes."Then he asked, "What month is this?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent for so long that we thought he would give it a name other than its own. Then he said, "Is it not Dhul Hijjah?"We said, "Yes."Then he asked, "What land is this?"We replied, "Allah and His Messenger know best."He remained silent for so long that we thought he would give it a name other than its own. Then he said, "Is it not the Sacred Land?"We said, "Yes."He said, "Indeed, your blood and your property," and I think he also said, "and your honor, are sacred to one another, just as this day of yours is sacred, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. You will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds. Do not return after me to misguidance, striking the necks of one another. Have I conveyed the message? Let those present convey it to those absent, for perhaps the one to whom it is conveyed will retain it better than some who hear it directly."Muhammad said, "And indeed it happened that way." He said, "Some of those to whom it was conveyed retained it better than some who heard it directly."
