I said to Ibn Abbas, "Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed ramal around the House and that it is a sunnah."He replied, "They have spoken truthfully and they have spoken falsely."I asked, "How have they spoken truthfully and falsely?"He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did perform ramal around the House, but it is not a sunnah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions performed ramal while the polytheists were on the mountain of Quayqian. Word reached him that they were saying his people were weakened by illness, so he ordered them to perform ramal to show them that they had strength."

قلت لابن عباس إن قومك يزعمون أن رسول الله ﷺ قد رمل بالبيت وأنها سنة قال صدقوا وكذبوا قلت كيف صدقوا وكذبوا قال قد رمل رسول الله ﷺ بالبيت وليس بسنة قد رمل رسول الله ﷺ وأصحابه والمشركون على جبل قعيقعان فبلغه أنهم يتحدثون أن بهم هزلا فأمر بهم أن يرملوا ليريهم أن بهم قوة
Its isnad is sahih. Fitr is Ibn Khalifah. The hadith was reported by Bukhari and Muslim, as in Nasb Raya 3:45. It will come at greater length at 2707.
