Abu Talib fell ill, and the Quraysh came to visit him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also came to visit him. By his head was a seat for one man, so Abu Jahl rose and sat in it.They said, "Your nephew speaks ill of our gods."Abu Talib said, "What is the matter with your people complaining about you?"The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Uncle, I want them to agree on a single word by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them tribute."Abu Talib asked, "What is it?"He answered, "There is no god but Allah."They stood up and said, "Has he made the gods into one God?"He said, And there was revealed "Sad. By the Quran containing reminder" [Sad 38:1], and he recited until he reached "Indeed, this is a strange thing" [Sad 38:5].Abu Usama narrated to us, Amash narrated to us, Abbad narrated to us, and he mentioned something similar. My father said, Ashjai said, Yahya bin Abbad.
حدثنا يحيى عن سفيان حدثني سليمان يعني الأعمش عن يحيى بن عمارة عن سعيد بن جبير
مرض أبو طالب فأتته قريش وأتاه رسول الله ﷺ يعوده وعند رأسه مقعد رجل فقام أبو جهل فقعد فيه فقالوا إن ابن أخيك يقع في آلهتنا قال ما شأن قومك يشكونك قال يا عم أريدهم على كلمة واحدة تدين لهم بها العرب وتؤدي العجم إليهم الجزية قال ما هي قال لا إله إلا الله فقاموا فقالوا أجعل الآلهة إلها واحدا قال ونزل {ص والقرآن ذي الذكر} فقرأ حتى بلغ {إن هذا لشيء عجاب} وحدثنا أبو أسامة حدثنا الأعمش حدثنا عباد فذكر نحوه وقال أبي قال الأشجعي يحيى بن عباد
