Bahz reported,

I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "There was a servant from among the servants of Allah whom Allah had granted wealth and children. He used to follow no religion of Allah ."Yazid said, "He continued like that until most of his life had passed and only a little remained. He reflected and realized that he had stored up no good with Allah . So he called his sons and said, 'My sons, what kind of father have you known me to be?'They said, 'The best of fathers, our father.'He said, 'By Allah, I will not leave any property of mine in the hands of any one of you unless I take it back, or you must do what I command you.'So he took a binding pledge from them. He said, 'When I die, take me and throw me into the fire. Then when I have become charcoal, crush me up.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ struck his thigh with his hand, as if to say, "Pulverize me, then scatter me in the wind. Perhaps I may escape Allah ."He said, "By the Lord of Muhammad, that is what they did to him when he died. Then he was brought back as fine as he had ever been and was presented before his Lord , who said, 'What drove you to do this?'He said, 'Fear of You, my Lord.'He said, 'Indeed, I shall make the trembling one hear.'"Yazid said, "I shall make you hear, trembling one. So Allah relented toward him."Bahz said, "I related this hadith to Hasan and Qatada, and they both narrated it back to me, saying 'so Allah relented toward him,' or 'so Allah turned to him in forgiveness.'" Yahya was uncertain.

حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد حدثنا بهز ويزيد قال أخبرنا

بهز المعنى حدثني أبي عن جدي قال

سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول إنه كان عبد من عباد الله أعطاه الله تبارك وتعالى مالا وولدا وكان لا يدين الله عز وجل دينا قال يزيد فلبث حتى ذهب عمر وبقي عمر تذكر فعلم أن لم يبتئر عند الله تبارك وتعالى خيرا دعا بنيه قال يا بني أي أب تعلمون قالوا خيره يا أبانا قال فوالله لا أدع عند رجل منكم مالا هو مني إلا أنا آخذه منه أو لتفعلن ما آمركم به قال فأخذ منهم ميثاقا قال أما لا فإذا مت فخذوني فألقوني في النار حتى إذا كنت حمما فدقوني قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ بيده على فخذه كأنه يقول اسحقوني ثم ذروني في الريح لعلي أضل الله تبارك وتعالى قال ففعل به ذلك ورب محمد حين مات قال فجيء به أحسن ما كان فعرض على ربه تبارك وتعالى فقال ما حملك على النار قال خشيتك يا رباه قال إني لأسمعن الراهبة قال يزيد أسمعك راهبا فتيب عليه قال بهز فحدثت بهذا الحديث الحسن وقتادة وحدثانيه فتيب عليه أو فتاب الله عز وجل عليه شك يحيى
