My father said to me, "Come along with me to Abu Barza al-Aslami." So I went with him until we came to him in his house. He was sitting in the shade of a reed loft. We sat with him on a day of intense heat.My father asked him, "Tell me, how did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform the obligatory prayers?"He replied, "He used to pray the midday prayer, which you call the first, when the sun had passed its zenith. He would pray the afternoon prayer, after which one of us could return to his dwelling at the farthest end of Madinah while the sun was still bright."I have forgotten what he said about the sunset prayer.He continued, "He preferred to delay the night prayer, which you call al-atamah. He disliked sleeping before it and conversation after it. He would finish the dawn prayer when one of us could recognize the person sitting next to him, and he would recite between sixty and a hundred verses in it."

قال لي أبي انطلق إلى أبي برزة الأسلمي فانطلقت معه حتى دخلنا عليه في داره وهو قاعد في ظل علو من قصب فجلسنا إليه في يوم شديد الحر فسأله أبي حدثني كيف كان رسول الله ﷺ يصلي المكتوبة قال كان يصلي الهجير التي تدعونها الأولى حين تدحض الشمس وكان يصلي العصر ثم يرجع أحدنا إلى رحله في أقصى المدينة والشمس حية قال ونسيت ما قال في المغرب قال وكان يستحب أن يؤخر العشاء التي تدعونها العتمة قال وكان يكره النوم قبلها والحديث بعدها قال وكان ينفتل من صلاة الغداة حين يعرف أحدنا جليسه وكان يقرأ بالستين إلى المائة
