Abu Musa Ashari said, I came to the Prophet ﷺ accompanied by two men from the Ashari tribe, one on my right and the other on my left, and both of them asked to be appointed to a position. The Prophet ﷺ was using his toothstick at the time.He said, "What do you say, Abu Musa?" or "Abdullah bin Qays?"I replied, "By the One who sent you with the truth, they did not inform me of what was in their minds, nor did I realize they were seeking appointment."It is as though I can still see his toothstick beneath his lip, which had drawn back. He said, "We do not, " or "We will not appoint to our work anyone who desires it. But you go, Abu Musa," or "Abdullah bin Qays."So he sent him to Yemen, and then sent Muaz bin Jabal to follow him. When Muaz arrived, Abu Musa said, "Come down," and he laid out a cushion for him. There was a man with him bound in chains.Muaz asked, "Who is this?"Abu Musa replied, "He was a Jew who embraced Islam, then returned to his former evil religion and became a Jew again."Muaz said, "I will not sit down until he is killed, by the judgment of Allah and His Messenger," repeating it three times. So the order was given and the man was executed.Then we discussed standing in prayer at night. Muaz bin Jabal said, "As for me, I sleep and I rise," or "I rise and I sleep, and I hope from my sleep what I hope from my standing in prayer."

قال أبو موسى الأشعري أقبلت إلى النبي ﷺ ومعي رجلان من الأشعريين أحدهما عن يميني والآخر عن يساري فكلاهما سأل العمل والنبي ﷺ يستاك قال ما تقول يا أبا موسى أو يا عبد الله بن قيس قال قلت والذي بعثك بالحق ما أطلعاني على ما في أنفسهما وما شعرت أنهما يطلبان العمل قال فكأني أنظر إلى سواكه تحت شفته قلصت قال إني أو لا نستعمل على عملنا من أراده ولكن اذهب أنت يا أبا موسى أو يا عبد الله بن قيس فبعثه على اليمن ثم أتبعه معاذ بن جبل فلما قدم عليه قال انزل وألقى له وسادة فإذا رجل عنده موثق فقال ما هذا قال كان يهوديا فأسلم ثم راجع دينه دين السوء فتهود فقال لا أجلس حتى يقتل قضاء الله ورسوله ثلاث مرار فأمر به فقتل ثم تذاكرنا قيام الليل فقال معاذ بن جبل أما أنا فأنام وأقوم أو أقوم وأنام وأرجو في نومتي ما أرجو في قومتي
