Muaz bin Jabal reported,

He came to Sham and saw the Christians. He mentioned the same meaning, except that he said, "I asked, 'Why do you do this?'They replied, 'This was the greeting of the prophets before us.'So I said, 'We have a greater right to do this for our Prophet.'"The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said, "They lied about their prophets just as they distorted their scripture. Allah has given us something better in its place, the salam, which is the greeting of the people of Paradise."

حدثنا معاذ بن هشام حدثني أبي عن القاسم بن عوف رجل من أهل الكوفة أحد بني مرة بن همام عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى عن أبيه

عن معاذ بن جبل قال

إنه أتى الشام فرأى النصارى فذكر معناه إلا أنه قال فقلت لأي شيء تصنعون هذا قالوا هذا كان تحية الأنبياء قبلنا فقلت نحن أحق أن نصنع هذا بنبينا فقال نبي الله ﷺ إنهم كذبوا على أنبيائهم كما حرفوا كتابهم إن الله عز وجل أبدلنا خيرا من ذلك السلام تحية أهل الجنة
