Adi bin Hatim said, "The cavalry of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," or he said, "the messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ," came while I was at Aqrab, and they took my paternal aunt along with some other people captive. When they were brought before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they were lined up before him.She said, "Messenger of Allah, the one who would intercede for me is far away, my child is gone, and I am an elderly woman of no service. Show me favor, and Allah will show favor to you."He asked, "Who is the one who would intercede for you?"She replied, "Adi bin Hatim."He said, "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger?"Then she repeated, "Show me favor."When he turned away, a man beside him, whom we believe was Ali, said, "Ask him for a mount."So she asked him, and he ordered that she be provided with one.She came to me and said, "You have done something your father would never have done. Go to him, whether out of desire or out of fear, for so-and-so went to him and received from him, and so-and-so went to him and received from him."So I came to him, and there was a woman with him along with two boys, or a boy. He mentioned how close they sat to the Prophet ﷺ, and I knew then that he was not a king like Chosroes or Caesar. He said to me, "Adi bin Hatim, what makes you flee from saying 'There is no god but Allah'? Is there any god other than Allah? What makes you flee from saying 'Allah is the Greatest'? Is there anything greater than Allah ?"I embraced Islam, and I saw his face light up with joy. He said, "Indeed, those who have incurred wrath are the Jews, and those who have gone astray are the Christians."Then people asked him something, and he praised Allah the Exalted and extolled Him, then said, "To proceed, it is upon you, people, to give generously from your surplus. Let a person give a sa, or part of a sa, a handful, or part of a handful." Shuba said, "And the most I know is that he said, 'A date, or part of a date.'" "For each of you will meet Allah
, and He will say what I am telling you, 'Did I not give you hearing and sight? Did I not give you wealth and children? What have you sent forth?' He will look before him and behind him, to his right and to his left, and find nothing. Nothing will shield him from the Fire except his face. So shield yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date. If you cannot find that, then with a kind word. I do not fear poverty for you. Allah the Exalted will surely grant you victory and bestow upon you, or open the lands for you, until a woman travels in her litter between Hira and Yathrib, or what she fears most for her litter is theft."Muhammad bin Jafar said, "Shuba narrated this to us countless times, and I read it back to him."
