We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a journey, and the people were struck by hardship. Abdullah bin Ubayy said to his companions, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse from around him." He also said, "If we return to Medina, the mightier will surely expel the weaker from it."So I came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of this. He sent for Abdullah bin Ubayy and questioned him, but he swore emphatically that he had not done so. They said, "Zayd has lied to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Zayd said, "What they said weighed heavily upon me, until Allah revealed confirmation of my truthfulness in 'When the hypocrites come to you' [Munafiqun 63:1]."He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called them so that he might seek forgiveness for them, but they turned their heads away."Regarding the words of the Most High, "As if they were propped-up pieces of timber" [Munafiqun 63:4], he said, "They were some men of the most handsome appearance."
