Jareer bin Abdullah reported,

We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and when we had left Madinah behind, a rider appeared, urging his mount toward us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It seems this rider wants you."The man reached us and greeted us, and we returned his greeting.The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Where have you come from?"He replied, "From my family, my children, and my clan."The Prophet ﷺ asked, "And where are you headed?"He said, "I am looking for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have found him."The man said, "Messenger of Allah, teach me what faith is."He answered, "That you testify there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, that you establish the prayer, pay the zakat, fast Ramadan, and make the pilgrimage to the House."The man said, "I affirm it."Then his camel's foreleg went into a warren of rat holes. The camel pitched forward and the man was thrown, landing on his head, and he died.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Bring the man to me."Ammar bin Yasir and Huzayfah sprang toward him and sat him up, then said, "Messenger of Allah, the man has passed away."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from them. Then he said to them, "Did you not notice how I turned away from the man? I saw two angels placing the fruits of Paradise into his mouth, so I knew that he had died hungry."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By Allah, this man is among those of whom Allah said, 'Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing, they are the ones who have security, and they are rightly guided' [Anam 6:82]."Then he said, "Take charge of your brother."So we carried him to the water, washed him, perfumed him, shrouded him, and carried him to the grave. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and sat at the edge of the grave and said, "Dig a side niche, do not dig a trench, for the niche is for us and the trench is for others."In another version, it was his young camel whose foreleg fell into one of those holes the rats had dug, and in it he said, "This is one of those who worked little and was rewarded much."

حدثنا أسود بن عامر حدثنا عبد الحميد بن أبي جعفر الفراء عن ثابت عن زاذان عن جرير بن عبد الله البجلي قال خرجنا مع رسول الله ﷺ من المدينة فبينا نحن نسير إذ رفع لنا شخص فذكر نحوه إلا أنه قال وقعت يد بكره في بعض تلك التي تحفر الجرذان وقال فيه هذا ممن عمل قليلا وأجر كثيرا
