Hammad bin Salama narrated to us: Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished praying, he would murmur something we could not make out, and he would not tell us what it was.Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Have you noticed this about me?"Someone said, "Yes."He said, "I was remembering one of the prophets who was given an army from among his people, and he said, 'Who can match these men?' or 'Who can stand against these men?' or some phrase like that." Sulayman was uncertain of the exact wording.The Prophet ﷺ continued, "So Allah revealed to him, 'Choose for your people one of three things. Either I set upon them an enemy from outside their own ranks, or famine, or death.' He consulted his people about it, and they said, 'You are the prophet of Allah. We leave the matter to you, so choose what is best for us.' So he rose to pray." He added, "Whenever something alarmed them, they would turn to prayer."He went on, "So he prayed, and then he said, 'As for an enemy from outside their ranks, no. As for famine, no. But death.' So death was set upon them for three days, and seventy thousand of them died. The murmuring you have observed is that I am saying, 'Allah, my Lord, by You I fight, by You I charge, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah.'"In this version he did not include the words, "Whenever something alarmed them, they would turn to prayer."
