Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, he would murmur something we could not understand, and he would not tell us about it.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Did you notice it?"Someone said, "Yes."He said, "I remembered a prophet from among the prophets who was given armies from his people. He said, 'Who can match these? Who can stand against these?' or some similar phrase," (Sulayman was uncertain of the exact wording).He continued, "Allah revealed to him, 'Choose for your people one of three things. Either I will give power over them to an enemy from outside their ranks, or famine, or death.' So he consulted his people about it, and they said, 'You are the prophet of Allah. We leave it to you, so choose for us.'He stood up to pray, for whenever they were alarmed they would turn to prayer in their distress. So he prayed and said, 'As for an enemy from outside, no. Or famine, no. Rather, death.' So death was sent upon them for three days, and seventy thousand of them died.So my murmuring that you see, I am saying, 'O Allah, my Lord, by You I fight, by You I attack, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah.'"
قال حدثنا عفان من كتابه قال حدثنا سليمان يعني ابن المغيرة قال ثنا ثابت عن عبد الرحمن بن أبي ليلى
كان رسول الله ﷺ إذا صلى همس شيئا لا نفهمه ولا يحدثنا به قال فقال رسول الله ﷺ فطنتم لي قال قائل نعم قال فإني قد ذكرت نبيا من الأنبياء أعطي جنودا من قومه فقال من يكافئ هؤلاء أو من يقوم لهؤلاء أو كلمة شبيهة بهذه شك سليمان قال فأوحى الله إليه اختر لقومك بين إحدى ثلاث إما أن أسلط عليهم عدوا من غيرهم أو الجوع أو الموت قال فاستشار قومه في ذلك فقالوا أنت نبي الله نكل ذلك إليك فخر لنا قال فقام إلى صلاته قال وكانوا يفزعون إذا فزعوا إلى الصلاة قال فصلى قال أما عدو من غيرهم فلا أو الجوع فلا ولكن الموت قال فسلط عليهم الموت ثلاثة أيام فمات منهم سبعون ألفا فهمسي الذي ترون أني أقول اللهم يا رب بك أقاتل وبك أصاول ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله
