Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan bin Hakam reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out at the time of Hudaybiya with somewhat over a thousand of his companions. When they reached Dhul-Hulayfa, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ garlanded the sacrificial animals, marked them, and entered the state of ihram for umrah. He sent ahead a scout from Khuza to bring him news about Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued until, when he was at the pool of Ashtat near Usfan, his Khuza scout came to him and said, "I have left Kaab bin Luayy and Amir bin Luayy, and they have gathered the Ahabish against you and rallied troops against you, and they intend to fight you and bar you from the House."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Give me your counsel. Do you think we should turn toward the families of those who have aided them and strike them? If they remain at home they will sit defeated and plundered. If they escape" — and Yahya bin Saeed reported from Ibn Mubarak the wording "grieved" — "and if they fight, it will be a neck that Allah has severed. Or do you think we should head for the House, and whoever bars us from it, we fight him?"Abu Bakr said, "Allah and His Messenger know best, Prophet of Allah. We have come only to perform umrah, not to fight anyone. But whoever stands between us and the House, we will fight him."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then move on."Zuhri said, Abu Hurairah used to say, "I have never seen anyone consult his companions more than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did."Zuhri said in the hadith of Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan bin Hakam, So they moved on. When they were partway along the road, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Khalid bin Walid is at Ghamim with a cavalry of Quraysh as a vanguard, so take the right-hand path."By Allah, Khalid did not realize they had passed until he saw the dust of the army, then he rode off galloping to warn Quraysh. The Prophet ﷺ continued until, when he reached the pass that descends down to them, his mount knelt down. Yahya bin Saeed reported from Ibn Mubarak, "his mount knelt down with him."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Up, up." But the camel persisted in kneeling. The people said, "Qaswa has become stubborn."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Qaswa has not become stubborn, that is not her nature. Rather, the One who restrained the elephant has restrained her."Then he said, "By the One in whose hand my soul is, they will not ask me for any plan that honors the sanctities of Allah without my granting it to them."Then he urged her on, and she sprang up. So he turned aside from that path and dismounted at the far end of Hudaybiya at a small water pit that the people could only sip from in tiny amounts. The people did not take long to drain it dry, and thirst was complained of to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.He pulled out an arrow from his quiver and ordered them to place it in the pit. By Allah, the water did not stop gushing forth abundantly until they all left it satisfied. While they were in that state, Budayl bin Warqa al-Khuzai came with some men of his people, and they were a trustworthy source of counsel for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the people of Tihama. He said, "I have left Kaab bin Luayy and Amir bin Luayy camped at the springs of Hudaybiya with their milch camels and their young ones. They intend to fight you and bar you from the House."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We have not come to fight anyone. We have come only to perform umrah. War has worn Quraysh down and harmed them. If they wish, I will grant them a truce period and they leave me to deal with the rest of the people. If I prevail, then if they wish to enter into what the people have entered into, they may. If not, they will have rested. But if they refuse, by the One in whose hand my soul is, I will fight them for this cause of mine until my neck is severed, or Allah will surely accomplish His command."Yahya reported from Ibn Mubarak, "until it is severed." He said, "If they wish, we will grant them a truce period."Budayl said, "I will convey to them what you say."He set off until he came to Quraysh and said, "We have come to you from this man, and we heard him say something. If you wish, we will present it to you."Their fools said, "We have no need for you to tell us anything about him."Those of sound judgment among them said, "Tell us what you heard him say."He said, "I heard him say such and such," and he related to them what the Prophet ﷺ had said. Then Urwa bin Masud al-Thaqafi stood up and said, "My people, am I not like a father to you?"They said, "Yes."He said, "And are you not like sons to me?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Do you suspect me of anything?"They said, "No."He said, "Do you not know that I summoned the people of Ukaz, and when they refused me, I came to you with my family and those who obeyed me?"They said, "Yes."He said, "This man has offered you a sound proposal. Accept it, and let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."So he came to him and began speaking to the Prophet ﷺ, who said to him something similar to what he had said to Budayl.Urwa then said, "Muhammad, tell me, if you destroy your own people, have you ever heard of any Arab before you who wiped out his own kin? But if it goes the other way, by Allah, I see faces and I see a rabble of people likely to flee and abandon you."Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه said to him, "Suck the clitoris of al-Lat. Would we flee from him and abandon him?"He said, "Who is this?"They said, "Abu Bakr."He said, "By the One in whose hand my soul is, were it not for a favor you once did me which I have not yet repaid, I would have answered you."He kept speaking with the Prophet ﷺ, and every time he spoke, he would take hold of his beard. Mughira bin Shuba was standing at the head of the Prophet ﷺ, armed with a sword and wearing a helmet. Every time Urwa reached out his hand toward the beard of the Prophet ﷺ, Mughira would strike his hand with the flat of the sword and say, "Keep your hand off the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Urwa lifted his hand and said, "Who is this?"They said, "Mughira bin Shuba."He said, "You traitor. Am I not still trying to undo your treachery?"Mughira had accompanied some men in the days of pre-Islamic ignorance, killed them, and taken their wealth, then come and accepted Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said, "As for the Islam, I accept it. As for the wealth, I have nothing to do with it."Urwa then began watching the Prophet ﷺ closely with his eye. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ never spat without it falling into the palm of one of them, who would rub it on his face and skin. When he commanded them, they hastened to obey his command. When he performed ablution, they almost came to blows over his ablution water. When they spoke, they lowered their voices in his presence. They would not stare at him, out of reverence for him.He returned to his companions and said, "My people, by Allah, I have visited kings. I have visited Caesar, Khosrow, and the Negus. By Allah, I have never seen a king whose companions revere him as the companions of Muhammad revere Muhammad ﷺ. By Allah, he never spits without it falling into the palm of one of them, who rubs it on his face and skin. When he commands them, they hasten to his command. When he performs ablution, they almost come to blows over his ablution water. When they speak, they lower their voices in his presence, and they do not stare at him out of reverence for him. He has offered you a sound proposal, so accept it."A man from Banu Kinana said, "Let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."When he came in sight of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions, the Prophet ﷺ said, "This is so-and-so. He is from a people who venerate sacrificial camels, so send them out for him."So they were sent out to him, and the people met him chanting the talbiya. When he saw that, he said, "Glory be to Allah. It is not right that these people be barred from the House."When he returned to his companions, he said, "I saw the sacrificial camels garlanded and marked. I do not think they should be barred from the House."Then a man among them named Mikraz bin Hafs stood up and said, "Let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."When he came in sight of them, the Prophet ﷺ said, "This is Mikraz, and he is a treacherous man."He began speaking with the Prophet ﷺ, and while he was speaking with him, Suhayl bin Amr arrived.Muamar said, And Ayub informed me from Ikrima that when Suhayl came, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Your affair has now become easy."Zuhri said in his narration, Suhayl bin Amr came and said, "Come, let us write a document between you and us."The Prophet called for the scribe, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Write, In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate."Suhayl said, "As for ar-Rahman, by Allah, I do not know what that is." Ibn Mubarak's version was, "what He is. But write, In Your name, O Allah, as you used to write."The Muslims said, "By Allah, we will write nothing but, In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Write, In Your name, O Allah."Then he said, "This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has settled upon."Suhayl said, "By Allah, if we knew that you were the Messenger of Allah, we would not have barred you from the House nor fought you. But write, Muhammad bin Abdullah."The Prophet ﷺ said, "By Allah, I am indeed the Messenger of Allah, even if you deny me. Write, Muhammad bin Abdullah."Zuhri said, And that was on account of his statement, "They will not ask me for any plan that honors the sanctities of Allah without my granting it to them."The Prophet ﷺ said, "On condition that you let us reach the House so that we may circumambulate it."Suhayl said, "By Allah, the Arabs shall not say that we yielded under pressure. But you may have it next year."So this was written down.Suhayl said, "And on condition that no man of ours comes to you, even if he follows your religion, without your returning him to us."The Muslims said, "Glory be to Allah. How can he be returned to the polytheists when he has come as a Muslim?"While they were in that state, Abu Jandal bin Suhayl bin Amr came stumbling in his fetters. Yahya reported from Ibn Mubarak, "rattling in his fetters." He had escaped from the lower part of Mecca and had thrown himself in among the Muslims.Suhayl said, "Muhammad, this is the first one I will hold you to. You must return him to me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We have not yet finalized the document."He said, "Then by Allah, I will never make peace with you over anything."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Grant him to me."He said, "I will not grant him to you."He said, "Yes, do so."He said, "I will not."Mikraz said, "Yes, we have granted him to you."Abu Jandal said, "Company of Muslims, am I to be returned to the polytheists when I have come as a Muslim? Do you not see what I have endured?" He had been severely tortured for the sake of Allah.Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said, So I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Are you not the Prophet of Allah?"He said, "Yes."I said, "Are we not in the right and our enemy in the wrong?"He said, "Yes."I said, "Then why should we accept this humiliation in our religion?"He said, "I am the Messenger of Allah, I do not disobey Him, and He is my helper."I said, "Were you not telling us that we would come to the House and circumambulate it?"He said, "Yes. But did I tell you that you would come to it this year?"I said, "No."He said, "You will come to it and circumambulate it."So I came to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, and said, "Abu Bakr, is this not truly the Prophet of Allah?"He said, "Yes."I said, "Are we not in the right and our enemy in the wrong?"He said, "Yes."I said, "Then why should we accept this humiliation in our religion?"He said, "Man, he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He does not disobey his Lord عز وجل, and He is his helper. So hold fast to him." Yahya bin Saeed had it, "to his stirrup," and said, "cling to his stirrup until you die. By Allah, he is upon the truth."I said, "Was he not telling us that we would come to the House and circumambulate it?"He said, "Yes. But did he tell you that you would come to it this year?"I said, "No."He said, "You will come to it and circumambulate it."Zuhri said, Umar said, "I performed many deeds because of that."When he had finished with the matter of the document, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his companions, "Get up, slaughter your sacrifices, then shave."By Allah, not one of them got up, even after he had said it three times. When none of them got up, he went in to Umm Salama and mentioned to her what he had encountered from the people.Umm Salama said, "Messenger of Allah, do you wish that to be done? Go out, then do not say a word to any of them until you have slaughtered your sacrificial camel and called your barber to shave you."So he got up and went out, not speaking to any of them, until he did just that. He slaughtered his sacrificial animal and called his barber, who shaved him. When they saw that, they got up and slaughtered, and they began shaving one another, until they nearly killed each other in their grief. Then some believing women came to him, and Allah عز وجل revealed, "O you who have believed, when believing women come to you as emigrants…" until His statement "…nor hold to marriage bonds with disbelieving women" [Mumtahanah 60:10].That day Umar divorced two wives he had had in the time of polytheism. One of them was married by Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, and the other by Safwan bin Umaya. Then he returned to Madinah, and Abu Baseer, a man from Quraysh, came to him as a Muslim. Yahya reported from Ibn Mubarak, Abu Baseer bin Usayd al-Thaqafi came to him as a Muslim emigrant. Akhnas bin Shariq hired a disbeliever from Banu Amir bin Luayy along with a freed slave of his and sent letters with them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking him to fulfill the agreement. They sent two men in pursuit of him and said, "The covenant you made with us."So he handed him over to the two men, and they set out with him until they reached Dhul-Hulayfa. They stopped to eat from some dates they had.Abu Baseer said to one of the two men, "By Allah, I see that this sword of yours, so-and-so, is a fine one."The other drew it out and said, "Indeed, by Allah, it is fine. I have tested it again and again."Abu Baseer said, "Show me, let me look at it."The man let him take it, and Abu Baseer struck him with it until he was dead. The other man fled until he reached Madinah, entering the mosque running. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This man has seen something terrifying."When he reached the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "By Allah, my companion has been killed, and I am about to be killed."Then Abu Baseer arrived and said, "Prophet of Allah, by Allah, Allah has fulfilled your obligation. You returned me to them, then Allah delivered me from them."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Woe to his mother, a kindler of war, if only he had someone with him."When he heard that, he realized he would be sent back to them, so he left and went to the seacoast.Abu Jandal bin Suhayl also escaped and joined Abu Baseer. After that, no man from Quraysh who accepted Islam failed to join Abu Baseer, until they had formed a band. By Allah, they would not hear of a Quraysh caravan setting out for Sham without intercepting it, killing the men, and taking their goods. So Quraysh sent to the Prophet ﷺ imploring him by Allah and by kinship to send for them, promising that whoever came to him would be safe. The Prophet ﷺ sent for them, and Allah عز وجل revealed, "And it is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them…" up to "…the disdain of pre-Islamic ignorance" [Fath 48:24–26].Their disdain was that they did not acknowledge that he was the Prophet of Allah, did not acknowledge "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate," and stood between him and the House.

Sahih
