The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sitting with a group of his companions, Abdul-Razzaq said, from the Ansar, when a great star was hurled across the sky and lit it up.He asked, "What did you used to say when something like this happened during the Jahiliyyah?"They replied, "We used to say that a great man has been born, or a great man has died."I asked Zuhri, "Were they hurled in the Jahiliyyah?"He said, "Yes, but they intensified when the Prophet ﷺ was sent."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "They are not hurled because of anyone's death or life. Rather, when our Lord, blessed be His name, decrees a matter, the bearers of the Throne glorify Him, then the inhabitants of the heaven next to them glorify Him, until the glorification reaches this lowest heaven. Then the inhabitants of the heaven nearest the bearers of the Throne ask the bearers of the Throne, 'What did your Lord say?' and they inform them. The inhabitants of each heaven inform the next, until the news reaches this heaven. The jinn snatch what they can hear, and they are pelted. Whatever they bring accurately is true, but they add to it and exaggerate."Abdul-Razzaq said, "And the jinn snatch and are pelted."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Ibn Kathir cited it in Tafsir 7:28 from this passage and said, "This is how Imam Ahmad narrated it. Muslim also included it in his Sahih through the narration of Salih bin Kaysan, Uzai, Yunus, and Maqil bin Ubaydullah, all four of them from Zuhri, from Ali bin Husayn, from Ibn Abbas, from a man among the Ansar, with this same wording. Yunus said, 'from men among the Ansar.' Nasai likewise narrated it in his Tafsir through the narration of Zubaydi from Zuhri. Tirmidhi narrated it there through Husayn bin Hurayth, from Walid bin Muslim, from Uzai, from Zuhri, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah, from Ibn Abbas, from a man among the Ansar."The narration through Uzai will come right after this one, and see Sahih Muslim 2:192.This does not constitute a flaw in the chain of transmission, for Ibn Abbas very often narrated from the companions what they heard from the Prophet. Sometimes he would mention this explicitly, and sometimes he would attribute it directly to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, making it a mursal report from a companion. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to trust one another's reports, and they were not liars.Addition, "he said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said," from manuscript D, and it is missing from manuscript H. In manuscript B, "yaqdhifuna" is replaced with "yaqrifuna," and we will mention this in the narration that follows.
