Ali burned a group of people who had apostatized from Islam. When news of this reached Ibn Abbas, he said, "I would not have burned them with fire, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Do not punish with the punishment of Allah.' I would have killed them, in accordance with the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, 'Whoever changes his religion, kill him.'"When this reached Ali, may Allah honor his face, he said, "Woe to the son of Ibn Abbas's mother!"

أن عليا حرق ناسا ارتدوا عن الإسلام فبلغ ذلك ابن عباس فقال لم أكن لأحرقهم بالنار وإن رسول الله ﷺ قال لا تعذبوا بعذاب الله وكنت قاتلهم لقول رسول الله ﷺ من بدل دينه فاقتلوه فبلغ ذلك عليا كرم الله وجهه فقال ويح ابن أم ابن عباس
Its isnad is sahih. It appears that this is from the narration of Ikrima from Ibn Abbas. Even if it were from his narration on the authority of Ali, and that he was present at the event and heard the words of Ibn Abbas and the words of Ali, it would still be connected, for we have already established the connectedness of his narration from Ali earlier at 723. The hadith was narrated by the whole group except Muslim, as in al-Muntaqa 4152.
