Bara bin Azib reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded us to dig the trench. A boulder appeared in a section of the trench that the pickaxes could not break through, so we complained about it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came.Awf said, "I think he said that he set down his garment, then descended to the boulder and took up the pickaxe."He said, "In the name of Allah," and struck a blow that shattered a third of the rock. Then he said, "Allah is the greatest. I have been given the keys of Sham. By Allah, I can see its red palaces right now from where I stand."Then he said, "In the name of Allah," and struck again, breaking another third of the rock. He said, "Allah is the greatest. I have been given the keys of Persia. By Allah, I can see Madain and its white palace from where I stand."Then he said, "In the name of Allah," and struck another blow, dislodging the rest of the rock. He said, "Allah is the greatest. I have been given the keys of Yemen. By Allah, I can see the gates of Sanaa from where I stand."

حدثنا محمد بن جعفر حدثنا عوف عن ميمون أبي عبد الله

عن البراء بن عازب قال

أمرنا رسول الله ﷺ بحفر الخندق قال وعرض لنا صخرة في مكان من الخندق لا تأخذ فيها المعاول قال فشكوها إلى رسول الله ﷺ فجاء رسول الله ﷺ قال عوف وأحسبه قال وضع ثوبه ثم هبط إلى الصخرة فأخذ المعول فقال بسم الله فضرب ضربة فكسر ثلث الحجر وقال الله أكبر أعطيت مفاتيح الشام والله إني لأبصر قصورها الحمر من مكاني هذا ثم قال بسم الله وضرب أخرى فكسر ثلث الحجر فقال الله أكبر أعطيت مفاتيح فارس والله إني لأبصر المدائن وأبصر قصرها الأبيض من مكاني هذا ثم قال بسم الله وضرب ضربة أخرى فقلع بقية الحجر فقال الله أكبر أعطيت مفاتيح اليمن والله إني لأبصر أبواب صنعاء من مكاني هذا
