The verse was revealed as "Maintain the prayers and the Asr prayer," and we recited it during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for as long as Allah willed that we recite it. Then Allah abrogated it and revealed "Maintain the prayers and the middle prayer" [Baqarah 2:238].A man who was with Shaqiq, called Azhar, said to him, "So it is the Asr prayer."He replied, "I have already told you how it was revealed and how Allah Most High abrogated it, and Allah knows best."
حدثنا يحيى بن آدم حدثنا فضيل يعني ابن مرزوق عن شقيق بن عقبة
نزلت حافظوا على الصلوات وصلاة العصر فقرأناها على عهد رسول الله ﷺ ما شاء الله أن نقرأها لم ينسخها الله فأنزل {حافظوا على الصلوات والصلاة الوسطى} فقال له رجل كان مع شقيق يقال له أزهر وهي صلاة العصر قال قد أخبرتك كيف نزلت وكيف نسخها الله تعالى والله أعلم
Its isnad is sahih. Fudayl bin Marzuk is Raqashi, and Shaqiq bin Uqbah Abdi, both are trustworthy, and their hadith is found in Muslim.The hadith was narrated by Muslim, 1/438, no. 630, in the chapter on mosques, evidence for those who say that the middle prayer is Asr. Abu Dawud, 1/112, no. 410, in the chapter on prayer, on the time of Asr prayer. Tirmidhi, 5/217, no. 2982, who said it is hasan sahih. And Nasai, 1/226, no. 472.
