Ammar bin Yasir reported, Ali and I were companions during the expedition of Dhat al-Ushayrah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ camped there and stayed for some time, we noticed some people from Banu Mudlij working at a spring of theirs in a date-palm grove.Ali said to me, "Abu al-Yaqzan, shall we go over to these people and see how they work?"So we went to them and watched them working for a while. Then drowsiness overtook us, so Ali and I went off and lay down among some palm trees in soft, dusty earth and fell asleep. By Allah, nothing woke us except the Messenger of Allah ﷺ nudging us with his foot, and we had become covered in dust from that loose earth. On that day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Ali, "Father of dust," because of the dust he saw on him. Then he said, "Shall I tell you the two most wretched of all people?"We said, "Yes, Messenger of Allah."He said, "The red-skinned man of Thamud who hamstrung the she-camel, and the one who will strike you, Ali, here," meaning the top of his head, "until this becomes soaked from it," meaning his beard.
