We were with Umar between Mecca and Medina when we tried to sight the new moon. I had sharp eyesight and spotted it, so I kept saying to Umar, "Don't you see it?"He replied, "I will see it while lying on my bed."Then he began telling us about the people of Badr. He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to show us beforehand the spots where they would fall. He would say, 'This is where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, Allah willing, and this is where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, Allah willing.'"Umar continued, "Then they fell exactly on those spots. I said, 'By the One who sent you with the truth, they did not miss those marks.' They were struck down precisely there."Then the Prophet ﷺ gave orders concerning them, and they were thrown into a well. He went to them and called out, "So-and-so, so-and-so, have you found what your Lord promised you to be true? For I have found what my Lord promised me to be true."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, are you speaking to a people who have already become corpses?"He replied, "You do not hear what I am saying any better than they do, but they are unable to answer."
حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد وأنا سألته حدثنا سليمان بن المغيرة حدثنا ثابت
كنا مع عمر بين مكة والمدينة فتراءينا الهلال وكنت حديد البصر فرأيته فجعلت أقول لعمر أما تراه قال سأراه وأنا مستلق على فراشي ثم أخذ يحدثنا عن أهل بدر قال إن كان رسول الله ﷺ ليرينا مصارعهم بالأمس يقول هذا مصرع فلان غدا إن شاء الله تعالى وهذا مصرع فلان غدا إن شاء الله تعالى قال فجعلوا يصرعون عليها قال قلت والذي بعثك بالحق ما أخطئوا تيك كانوا يصرعون عليها ثم أمر بهم فطرحوا في بئر فانطلق إليهم فقال يا فلان يا فلان هل وجدتم ما وعدكم الله حقا فإني وجدت ما وعدني الله حقا قال عمر يا رسول الله أتكلم قوما قد جيفوا قال ما أنتم بأسمع لما أقول منهم ولكن لا يستطيعون أن يجيبوا
