Malik bin Aws bin Hadathan reported,

While I was sitting with him, his doorkeeper Yarfa came and said to Umar, "Would you receive Uthman, Abdul-Rahman, Saad, and Zubayr, who are seeking permission to enter?"He said, "Yes, let them in."So they entered, greeted him, and sat down. Yarfa waited a little, then said to Umar, "Would you receive Ali and Abbas?"He said, "Yes," and gave them permission. When they came in, they sat down.Abbas said, "Commander of the Believers, judge between me and Ali."The group, Uthman and his companions, said, "Judge between them and give them both relief from one another."Umar said, "Take your time. I adjure you by Allah, by whose permission the heavens and the earth stand firm, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'We are not inherited from. Whatever we leave behind is charity,' meaning the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself?"The group said, "He did say that."Then Umar turned to Ali and Abbas and said, "I adjure you both by Allah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said this?"They replied, "He did say that."Umar said, "Then let me tell you about this matter. Allah singled out His Messenger with something from this fay that He gave to no one else. Allah the Exalted said, 'And what Allah restored to His Messenger from them, you did not spur any horse or camel for it' [Hashr 59:6]. This verse was exclusively for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Yet, by Allah, he did not hoard it for himself nor prefer himself over you in it. He gave it to you and distributed it among you until this remaining property was left of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would spend on his family their yearly maintenance from this property, then take what remained and use it as Allah's property is used. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ acted in this way throughout his life. I adjure you by Allah, do you know this?"They said, "Yes."He said to Ali and Abbas, "I adjure you both by Allah, do you know this?"They said, "Yes."He continued, "Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, and Abu Bakr said, 'I am the successor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' So Abu Bakr, may Allah the Exalted be pleased with him, took charge of it and managed it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had managed it, and you were present at that time."Then he turned to Ali and Abbas and said, "You two claim that Abu Bakr was such and such regarding it, but Allah knows that he was truthful, righteous, rightly guided, and a follower of the truth in his handling of it."
