Hasan Basri reported,

A man said to Amr bin As, "Tell me about a man whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved at the time of his death. Was he not a righteous man?"Amr replied, "Yes."The man said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died loving you, and he had appointed you to office."Amr responded, "He did appoint me, but by Allah, I do not know whether it was out of love for me or because he needed my service. Let me tell you, however, of two men whom the Messenger of Allah ﷺ loved at the time of his death, Abdullah bin Masud and Ammar bin Yasir."

حدثنا أسود بن عامر قال ثنا جرير يعني ابن حازم قال سمعت

الحسن قال

قال رجل لعمرو بن العاص أرأيت رجلا مات رسول الله ﷺ وهو يحبه أليس رجلا صالحا قال بلى قال قد مات رسول الله ﷺ وهو يحبك وقد استعملك فقال قد استعملني فوالله ما أدري أحبا كان لي منه أو استعانة بي ولكن سأحدثك برجلين مات رسول الله ﷺ وهو يحبهما عبد الله بن مسعود وعمار بن ياسر
