We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey when we stopped in a land abundant with lizards. We caught some and slaughtered them. While the pots were boiling with them, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and said, "A nation from the Children of Israil was lost, and I fear that this may be them. So pour them out."So we poured them out.
حدثنا أبو معاوية حدثنا الأعمش عن زيد بن وهب
كنا عند النبي ﷺ في سفر فنزلنا أرضا كثيرة الضباب قال فأصبنا منها وذبحنا قال فبينا القدور تغلي بها إذ خرج علينا رسول الله ﷺ فقال إن أمة من بني إسرائيل فقدت وإني أخاف أن تكون هي فأكفئوها فأكفأناها

Its isnad is sahih. Haythami mentioned it in Majma 4/37 and said, "Ahmad, Tabarani in Kabir, Abu Yaala, and Bazzar narrated it, and their men are the men of sahih." It is found in Abu Yaala's Musnad 2/231, number 931, but with the wording of 17688, which comes after the next one. See also Kashf Astar, number 1217, and see Mushkil Athar by Tahawi 4/277, and Maani Athar 4/197.The scholars have two views regarding this hadith, either that it is abrogated, or that it is to be understood as disapproval directed at someone whose own disposition finds it repugnant, because it is reported in Sahihayn that the Prophet ﷺ did not eat it, and that it was only eaten in front of him by the companions, as in Bukhari 9/663, number 5537 (Fath), Abu Dawud 3795, Nasai 7/199, Ibn Majah 3238, and Ibn Abu Shayba 8/78. But I am inclined toward abrogation, for the hadith that comes after this one states explicitly that they were hungry, and their cooking of the lizard meat was based on their acceptance of eating it, which means abrogation is the necessary conclusion.
