I said, "Messenger of Allah, tell me what is lawful for me and what is forbidden to me."The Prophet ﷺ looked me up and down, then said, "Righteousness is what the soul finds peace in and what the heart feels at rest with, and sin is what the soul does not find peace in and what the heart does not feel at rest with, even if those who give legal opinions tell you otherwise."He also said, "Do not eat the flesh of domestic donkeys or any predatory animal with fangs."
حدثنا زيد بن يحيى الدمشقي قال حدثنا عبد الله بن العلاء قال سمعت مسلم بن مشكم قال سمعت
قلت يا رسول الله أخبرني بما يحل لي ويحرم علي قال فصعد النبي ﷺ وصوب في النظر فقال النبي ﷺ البر ما سكنت إليه النفس واطمأن إليه القلب والإثم ما لم تسكن إليه النفس ولم يطمئن إليه القلب وإن أفتاك المفتون وقال لا تقرب لحم الحمار الأهلي ولا ذا ناب من السباع
Its isnad is sahih. Zayd bin Yahya is Ibn Ubayd, the Damascene, Abu Abdullah Khuzai, trustworthy, and praised by Ahmad. As for Abd Ala, the correct form is Abdullah bin Ala bin Zabr, who was mentioned shortly before.Haythami graded the hadith sahih (1/175), and something similar to it is found in Muslim (4/1980, no. 2553), in the Book of Righteousness, chapter on the tafsir of righteousness, and in Tirmidhi (4/597, no. 2389), in the Book of Asceticism, chapter on righteousness and sin, and in Darimi (2/415, no. 2789), similarly.
